Withdrawal of recognition for KMC by the Medical Council of India
Manipal/Mangalore: The Medical Council of India (MCI) has recommended the Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal and KMC, Mangalore for “withdrawal of recognition and stoppage of admissions” to the Central Government, according to the official MCI website (as on April 6, 2008).
Most of the courses in both the colleges have been recommended for withdrawal of recognition, except for a few courses such as MD, Radiology, MD, Psychiatry which still remain valid degrees. MS, ENT and nearly all other degrees’ status on the website read: “recommended for de-recognition. Admission stopped.”
The students of the colleges are aware of this notice by the MCI. A sixth semester student from KMC, Manipal said, “It is pretty nonsensical as I have seen worse colleges that are recognised. We are already in the college and can only keep our fingers crossed till this crisis passes. It has definitely brought the image of the college down. Certain prospective students have second thoughts on whether or not to join the college.” An alumnus added, “There is no infrastructural reason why the college should be de-recognised. This may be a case of internal politics between MCI and KMC.”
MCI is a statutory body established in 1934 under the Indian Medical Council Act, 1933 for “inspection/visitation with a view to maintain proper standard of medical education in India.” What comes as a surprise is the fact that KMC being the oldest college under Manipal University has had to face such notices from the MCI for the last four or five years.
