Manipal: One and a half months for the onset of monsoons and the Udupi municipality has geared up for providing a better drainage and road facility to the residents of Udupi for the upcoming rainy season. Owing to this there is a massive construction going on in the highway joining Kinnimulki to Udupi.
According to the accounts of Superintendent of the municipality office, a total of one crore has been invested for this project which has been funded from the state finance. Captain Swamy, who is the engineer of the project, expects the areas from Kinnimulki till the Taluk office in Udupi to be completed in the first phase of the project. Then with the onset of monsoons they will make their course towards other parts of Udupi.
Though the work had been started voluntarily by the municipality, the people are a bit agitated by the way the work is progressing. “The municipality is doing the work in those areas where there is least concern for the problems of drainage and footpaths. The main place of the city like the bus stand, the Krishna math road remain in worst conditions in terms of proper drainage and roads maintenance and the conditions become worst in rainy seasons,” said Rajendra Krishnan, a shopkeeper in Kinnimulki. The condition will worsen in case the work does not complete before the monsoons as the side of the roads have been dug out and the main highway road itself has become narrower creating a lot more inconvenience to the people.
