Manipal: Wondering where one can attain peace and sanctity and simultaneously explore the beaches and various other adventure sports- for all those who love travelling, Murudeshwar around 100 km from Manipal, is a place worth visiting within this region.
The main attraction of the place is 123 ft high idol of Lord Shiva, towering as the tallest Shiva idol in the world, intricately carved. Other life-size statues of God’s and demons can also be found around this area. There is a temple Gopurum still under construction that is 24 floors high, as well as a church nearby.
“My favourite sight was the chariot depicting a scene from Mahabharat. History has it that on one night of the year, moonlight falls on the chariot, that makes the horses look life-like!”, said Roopali Dhinga,2nd year, Biotechnology, MIT.
Adventure sports lovers can look forward to parasailing on favourable days at a reasonable price of Rs 150, as well as boating up to an island into the waters and back. “Murudeshwar is pretty exciting for boating as well as parasailing. The Arabian Sea is a treat if it is a bit rough when you are out in it,” said Mayuk Bandopadhyay, 3rd year Mechanical Engineering, MIT.
One can either take a bus, train or their own personal vehicle to reach the place. The train journey takes around two and a half to three hours, at Rs 30 one-way. The bus route moves from Manipal,Udupi, Mulki, Bhatkal to Murudeshwar. Hiring a vehicle for the whole day costs about Rs 2,500- Rs 3,000 depending on its’ type. “Murudeshwar is definitely worth going once on a bike. It takes around one and a half to two hours. We went as a group of ten and felt it was worth the trip”, said Abhishek Girdhar, 2nd year, ENC, MIT. At present, the locals within the region are content with the pattern of tourism as it is quite subtle and do not feel that the place is infested with foreigners.
Situated in the Western Ghats, the scenic surroundings along with excellent options for accommodation like the Naveen Beach Resort and RNS Residency just makes Murudeshwar an ideal spot for a holiday. Besides being an amalgam of a wide range of activities catering to all age groups, Murudeshwar becomes a must visit.
