Manipal: Syndicate Institute of Rural Entrepreneurship Development (SIRD), Manipal, an institutional initiative for promotion of Rural Entrepreneurship and Micro Enterprises is a NGO established under the aegis of Syndicate Rural Development Trust.

Training programmes like entrepreneurship development, agricultural Entrepreneurship Development Programmes, skill up gradation programmes, rural development and transfer of technology programmes are held on a periodic basis.

K R Brahma, Director, SIRD, Manipal said that SIRD programmes are especially for unemployed youth, women empowerment and self help groups. The emphasis is laid on experiential learning and character building. He also added that time is not a constraint here. The candidates get enough time to learn the skills accurately.

“It was established in Manipal in 2000 and since then about 6264 candidates have been trained.” said Bharath Bhushan, Associate director of SIRD, Manipal.
At present about 28 trainees from different rural areas of Dakshin Kannada are learning embroidery and fabric painting.

Usha Shetty, a student from Hebri said “we were selected through an interview process. Our accommodation and food expenses are borne by the trust.” She also added that she found out about the training program through newspaper advertisements and the radio.

Mukta Srinivasan, a teacher from Udupi said “I have been training women to get self employed for the past two years. Even married women can take the workshops organised and become self sufficient.”

A total of 4 SIRD’s have been established in Karnataka which add up to 8 SIRD’s all over India. Both in-house training and camp programmes are sponsored by Syndicate Bank and National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Programme. “SIRD extends support and guidance in the post training period so that trained youth can successfully manage their micro-enterprises with credit linkages with the bank” added K R Bramha.
