Manipal: Starting from next semester, students residing at the MIT hostels will have to pay an advance of Rs 16000 for the entire year towards the mess charges along with all the other charges. The mess charges will be taken at the beginning of the semester during admission.

“This only applies to the MIT hostel messes and not the private messes. The private messes will run as before and there will be no taking of advance for such messes,” said Basudev Rao, Mess Manager of Ashraya Mess. According to the officials of Manipal University, the bill that comes out at the end of every semester will be deducted from the total amount that is initially paid in advance. The balance amount that will be left over will be refunded to the students. The facility of signing in and signing out of messes will be there as usual and student can join in and join out anytime according to their requirements.

“The food is monotonous and the quality keeps on deteriorating even if we pay for it. The new program of paying Rs 16000 in advance for two semesters is quite expensive and one is still not sure if the quality of food is going to change or not either,” said Soumya Agarwal, 1st year, MIC.

The number of students who eat at the mess is not in ratio as compared to those who prefer to eat from out. This may be because of several reasons like the poor quality of food, the number of workers who are insufficient to serve the food. A lot more is being expected by the MIT messes due to the introduction of the advance payment system. However the question still remains, will the introduction of the advance payment system attract students back to the messes?
