Manipal: The six day long extravaganza began with creative writing and cultural parade. The two day pre-Utsav events were included in the main days of Utsav; the staff and kids event were scheduled together with the students’ events.
Events such as street play to fashion show, song and dance brightened up KMC greens for these six days. The infrastructural was very well done with a shamiana like setup, fans and water dispensers. The main stage was well equipped with a sound system and lights and four screens had been put up where live streaming of the ongoing performances was being telecasted. There was a fire brigade available for 12 hours in a day. This was arranged by Dr. Pushpa Kini, head of student affairs, MU. Using fire as a prop was hence allowed on the stage
This year the new event was Hindi Poetry Writing, until last year this had been merged with the English Poetry Writing. Surekha Bhat, secretary for cultural coordination, Manipal University, said, ‘The competition is increasing every year. The work pressure was never felt because the students did most of the work. It was good team work. I really enjoyed watching mime and Indian non classical light vocal solo.’ The Utsav team was divided in a hierarchy of event volunteers, event coordinators and core volunteers.
The various staff and kids’ events were much enjoyed. The tiny tots put up an amazing show at the dance competitions held separately for primary and secondary school children. The fancy dress held for the kindergarten students received much applause as the shy little kids showed their happy colors.  The staff showed their artistic skills with the Rangoli competition and the Staff Variety Entertainment.
The elaborate costumes and extravagant props used by the various participants were visually appealing and the fashion show pulled in the largest crowd.  Utsav 2008 was definitely a reason to celebrate.
