Manipal: The singing, dance and fashion show events were the biggest crowd pullers of Utsav 2008. The to-be pharmacists, doctors, engineers, journalists displayed their talent and entertained the crowd.

The first day saw instrumental both Classical and Non-Classical. The melodious tunes from the tabla and the guitar were greatly enjoyed. As the evening progressed, the Cultural Parade that inaugurated Utsav set the right mood for the following Indian Non-Classical Light Solo/ Group Singing.

On the second day, the staff was all charged up with ‘Anthakshari’ and the Staff Variety Entertainment.

On the third day, the Classical Singers along with the Traditional Indian Dancers displayed their talents that have been cutivated after years of training. The Indian Classical Vocal Solo was won by Rahul Venugopal, from KMC (Mangalore). The Indian Non-Classical Dance Group was won by the KMC (Manipal) team. They danced to the Bombay theme from the movie Bombay, their formations and dance moves were splendid. Their team also performed on the final day of Utsav at the Valedictory Function.

Indian Classical Dance Solo saw many complicated dancing styles with performers balancing on a brass plate and a pot.

The next day, Western Dance Group/ Solo was a complete package of brilliant props, costumes and dance. In the solo category, people danced to popular Hip-Hop songs or the good old ones like Thriller. The group dances saw people dressed as zombies, or moon walking to popular tracks, shadow dancing styles were also popular.

The fourth day kick started with a very entertaining Anthakshari. Enthusiasm grew with the Western Solo/Group Singing Competitions. Popular English songs resonated at KMC Greens, old tracks by the Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls and Abba.

But, the highlight of the day was the Fashion Show. Being Utsav’s most awaited event, the place was jam-packed. Themes were diverse ranging from cultural to themes like crowning of kings. The stage was set up with various props and sets that defined splendor. The winner of the Fashion Show was MIC, with the theme ‘Let Her Live’ which was about female infanticide.
