Day two of Manipal Media Students’ Convention (MMSC) witnessed a whole lot of discussions on the subjects like internet, new media and the World Wide Web. The day initially began with Kiran Jonnalagadda from Bangalore speaking on the topic, ‘Content is not king’. Then Kiran Shah a PH.D student from centre for the study of culture and society presented reading cyberspaces on narrative literature where he discussed the different ways of interpretation of narrative literature.
The delegates next took the podium with Yash Chawla from Bangalore and Shravan Kokroo speaking on ‘Information superhighway prone to accidents’, where he emphasized on how internet can be useful and can be disastrous too on the other hand. Then Nithya Dayal and Priyam Malhotra discussed about copy right laws and online piracy and to what extent the online piracy can be considered to be correct in users perspective and to what is extent it is safe.
“It was a nice experience to attend the convention. As I am going to join communication studies next year, it was a total pre-experience listening to the experts in the field and knowing about all the media related issues,” said Sammer Jha, the youngest delegate who attended the convention.
The second session of day two witnessed a lot more discussions from the experts like Dr Sandhya Rao and delegate Sivasubramaniam Muthusamy who talked about ways of internet content writing, internet society and governance through internet respectively.
Lawrence Liang’s discussion about copyright laws was informative and Praronjoy Guha Thakurtha’s discussion about what exactly is the definition of new media was quite debatable. Mukesh Sharma’s discussion about the IP TV and the technologies involved in broadcasting gave further insight of the broadcast world.
“Judging by the success of the first event, MMSC would establish itself as an annual event with greater participation and would go farther so as to attract the media leaders from around the world”, said Sivasubramanian Muthusamy one of the participants.
MMSC ’08 came to an end with a valedictory function, with the Chief Guest Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, Dr G K Prabhu, the Registrar of Manipal University and Dr Buroshiva Dasgupta, Director of MIC. The ‘best outstation delegate’ was given to Shravan Kokroo from Jaypee business school Noida – he won a cash prize of Rs 2000.
