Manipal: “We will follow our usual entrance procedure this year,” said Vice Chancellor of MU, Dr RP Warrier, about the new UGC ruling stating that all Deemed Universities should now have a common entrance examination. Manipal University, one of the largest Deemed Universities in India, does not seem to be very happy with the ruling.
“We understand that if this ruling is implemented, it will be easier for students as they will not have to write too many entrances and I am sure there will be a lot of popular support for this. But this rule looks very good only on paper. Practically, its implementation is near impossible,” said the Registrar of MU, Dr GK Prabhu.
These practical difficulties, according to him include bringing the Deemed Universities together and agreeing on standards for the entrance exams. “The kinds of courses offered in these universities are varied and it is very difficult to set common criteria,” he added.
Sources tell us that the University has, in the past, gone to court against UGC rules about reserving seats for OBCs. The university, according to sources, is ready to go to court against this rule as well, if needed.
“It is too late to implement the rule this year; we hope it will be sorted out soon,” said the Registrar.
