MICians stage ‘Macbeth’

Manipal: It started as an assignment, and it grew to be an event. The first year BAJC students of MIC staged Macbeth at the TMA Pai Planetarium on May 3rd. The entry was free as this was included in their academics.

The originality of the Shakespearean script was maintained, although it was edited due to time constraint. The entire batch of sixty students had some part to play in the play. Some helped with the back-stage and some with the designing. The costumes were modernized as Lady Macbeth wore a modern day gown and Macbeth wore the armor over a shirt and pants. The play was greatly enjoyed by the audience. Actors being so proficient, the otherwise obscure Old English was well received by the audience.

M V Kamath, the honorary director of MIC after watching the play said, ‘I didn’t know if I was in London or Manipal when I saw the play. The students were excellent.’ The play was well received by the audience who applauded the students’ effort. Vinith Krishnan, the director of the play, said, ‘The Macbeth experience was wonderful. It was a pleasure working with the entire class.’

There were a few mishaps during the play which made the audience roll with laughter; the trouble Macbeth went through to pick up Lady Macbeth was one of these. Despite these little troubles, the students pulled off a good event with the few resources provided to them.

The little stage space didn’t stop the students from working hard on the props and backdrops, there were elaborate preparations made anyway. The Shakespearean era truly came alive with the play of Macbeth-a story of politics and power play.
