Kala Manch Dr T S Raghu Raman

Manipal: Dr (AVM) TS Raghu Raman AVSM, a retired Air Vise Marshal is now the new medical superintendent of KMC. He has been a part of the air force for the last 37 years and is also a winner of the President’s Award. Dr (AVM) Raghu Raman who has also done his MD in paediatrics has been a professor of paediatrics at the Command Hospital in Bangalore previously. He has also written various articles related to medicine. Here are few excerpts from the interview TMJ had with him.

Q: How has your experience been in the Air Force department?
A: I have served the Indian Air Force for 37 years which is a long time. I have been a part of the department of paediatrics in the armed forces. Since I am a professor of paediatrics and have been in the teaching field, I think all my experience is going to help me in my future work.

Q: Is this your first time as a member of the Manipal administration?
A:  Yes because I have not exactly been a part of the Manipal administration before. But I have had experience in hospital administration as well as special hospital administration for about 5-6 years. I have also been a professor in Paediatrics in the Air Force Hospital in Bangalore. Keeping this in mind the Manipal family decided to offer this post to me.

Q: What made you accept this post?
A: I thought my experience of about 5-6 years in hospital administration and teaching, including service n special hospitals would help me at excel at this post. Hence i accepted the offer put forth by the Manipal fraternity.

Q: Did you have any specific guidelines before coming here?
A: Working in a multi-speciality and teaching hospital is very challenging. Besides, the standards that this college has set are very high. I found it very challenging and new it would always be a good experience to work for such an Institution.

Q: What is your take on the facility provided by Manipal University?
A: It is certainly a very professional university and things out here are very organized. That is the best part about it. Also, the education here is of high quality. Having such a huge medical library itself is self explanatory.

Q: What about the students? What would you say about them?
A: I have not started interacting with the students yet since I am just a week old. But I am looking forward to it. This is going to be a learning experience for me.

Q: What is your aim and policies as the new medical superintendant?
A: I am still very new so I do not really have any. But my main aim is to make our patients happy and to come up with innovations in patient care. Whoever comes here should go back with a smile on their face. So every policy I make shall be only for the welfare of patients only.
