The Manipal Foundation
Manipal: "Sometimes, when I eat out, I feel very guilty about the amount of food that is wasted. That food could probably help a poor child. I want to help people, and hopefully, in a big way," said P Balachandran Warrier, CEO, Manipal Foundation. The Manipal Foundation has been collecting funds and helping the needy in the fields of Education, Health Care, Research and Socio Economic upliftment.
The foundation is an independent body, which sustains itself financially through the funds collected from donors. In the year 2006-07 alone, the total number of inpatients treated free of cost, through the foundation, is 10, 673 and the total number of outpatients treated free of cost is 1,97,197. "This includes 124 open heart surgeries performed free of cost at Manipal Hospital (Bangalore) alone. Apart from that, we help out in 16 other hospitals in India," Warrier said.
The foundation also helps the 'Rural Mother and Child Welfare Homes' (RMCWH), which are present in 82,000 villages.
Scholarships are given to meritorious, poor children for pursuing their education. The research and socio economic upliftment help is very little as of now, but plans are in the pipeline. "I joined the foundation last May (2007), when my younger brother, Dr Raj Warrier, joined as the Vice Chancellor of the Manipal University and told me about the foundation," said Warrier. "I hope to do a lot with the foundation. A lot has been done in KMC Manipal also, and I am happy," he added.
"You can 'Smile & Share' only when you are happy; and only then can you 'Enrich your Heart & Soul', which is precisely our motto," he said.
