KMC Hospital M’lore performs first ‘Balloon Synoplasty’

Mangalore: The balloon synoplasty, which has gained recognition all over the world due to its innumerable advantages for the patients of sinusitis, has now been successfully performed for the first time at Kasturba Medical College (KMC) hospital, Mangalore on April 12th by Dr. Abhijit Kumar, a Consultant ENT.

The whole surgery deals with inserting a thin balloon to open the blocked sinus passages which have been inflamed due to bacterial, viral and microbial infections. The balloon inserted then fractures the bone and spreads the lining apart leaving the body lining unharmed, as opposed to what used to happen in typical sinus surgery earlier.

“This is a new non-invasive and relatively bloodless surgical treatment option for selected patients with sinus diseases”, said Dr. Abhijit Kumar. The main advantages of balloon synoplasty are that there is no bleeding and swelling later on as there is no cutting or operating. The difference is that earlier the bone had to be cut in order to clear the passage but now the bone is fractured by the balloon and the patient can get back to work within 24 hours of the treatment.

The prices of balloon synoplasty are higher than the prices of normal surgery but the prices are expected to come down in the near future as this surgery is relatively safer and the endoscopic treatment is preferred by the majority.
